I played a very brief game against legion recently when I tried out stryker 1 heavy metal for the first time.
My list is this:
Stryker 1
Hurricane
Hurricane
Squire
Junior
Charger
Jakes 1
Charger
Charger
Arlan Strangeways.
I was facing a legion list which was tooled to face cygnar (more specifically it was tooled to beat storm lances)
PLylith
Ravagore
Ravagore
Bolt thrower
Naga
Succubus
Max Raptors
Anyssa ryval
Fury support.
Our meta has been trying out using around 9 pieces of impactful terrain, trying out things like setting random pieces on fire or using chains of fog markers. In this game our most impactful piece of terrain was a forest bisecting the entire middle of the centre zone.
So this game was short and I had to keep it short because my opponent could essentially kill half a Stormwall a turn with blessed shooting with parasite. The forests meant that he had the opportunity to shoot me when I will have troubles shooting him back.
He had turn 1, he ran his army all out behind forests, Raptors on my right, beasts in the middle and Anyssa on the left. Anyssa had preyed Jakes 1 because my opponent knew I had issues with stealth.
In my turn I had to position to block off my valuable support pieces from his shooting and hopefully pick off someone with some luck.
I activated the right Hurricane and ran him forward to position to walk into the forest and shoot or trample through and buy attacks. The extra 2" of deployment from heavy metal was really valuable here.
Juniors charger ran to the right of that Hurricane to block off Raptor Los.
Stryker activated, walked up and put snipe onto the unactivated hurricane and arcane shield on the activated one. I positioned him right next to a rubble pile ready to either move forward or walk into the pile, depending on what was needed.
The snipe hurricane got a focus from Arlan, walked up and dropped 2 AOEs onto Anyssa and did 3 wounds with boosted blast damage. Jakes on the left positioned 1 charger next to the hurricane to make the wall larger and one charger to left to try and stop Anyssa from riding past.
My opponents turn starts, he puts parasite onto my left hurricane and after a flurry of blessed shooting ripped the right hand side off of the hurricane. Ouch, that's a lot of damage!
That's essentially all he did, he couldn't come out from behind his forests because he knew my feat was coming. He probably should have tried to book his Raptors forward, but he was currently untouchable behind a forest so I could see why he didn't. He dropped blizzard on lylith to stealth her.
Anyssa tried to run past my lines for a couple of shots at Jakes next turn. She was 12" away from one of my chargers on the left.
My turn, I had to feat and I had to take a little risk. I checked with some proxies and realised that the left hurricane could see a Ravagore behind a forest and the right hurricane could walk into it and shoot.
So I take from the squire, allocate 2 focus to the damaged hurricane and 1 to the undamaged one and upkeep arcane shield to leave 3 left on stryker.
I did a mistake or 2 here, which turned a slam dunk game into a merely very good game. I feared with stryker, moved up and cast blur on Jakes. The reason will become important. I then feated. The mistakes were:
1. Why didn't stryker walk into the rubble?
2. Why did he go first? I cast blur in fear for Jakes life if I accidentally didn't kill Anyssa, but I could have done her charger first. Nothing he did required him to go first. Instead of being 16/20 camping 1 he could have been 20/20 camping 3 vs enemy assassinations.
My inexperience with him shines through.
So my opponents mistake was Anyssa was 12" away from Anyssa, but an energisered charger threats 13" vs a stealth model. Fully loaded charger walks and energisers into range and kills her on the first shot. Damn, wasteful chargers .
The second charger walked into a trench and shot a Ravagore twice doing a *lot* of damage. Damn, I love chargers.
Arlan repaired my damaged hurricane who walked around a forest and popped the same Ravagore with a full salvo. Boosted the first electro projector which hit and knocked him down and boosted both damage rolls. The all the damage I put both AOEs into him and he died. My second hurricane walked through the forest and bracketed the second Ravagore, doing huge damage but not killing it, but letting a free deathstalker in the bargain.
I pass the turn, asking my opponent to kill me.
My opponent has, at most, feated lyliths 2 shots (one with parasite) and 2 Raptors, with the Raptors being out of range of the feat. Finally there was a deathstalker pink. The Ravagore couldn't be in Los without being in melee of the hurricane.
He goes for it, misses both lylith shots. Gee gee.
It was an interesting match. I'd imagine that if I was running Maddox, Haley 3 or nemo 3 I would be in a world of trouble as all my stuff gets shot off the table, but stryker is capable of playing fair while all his pieces, chargers and hurricanes, are decidedly unfair. The ranged efficiency of the chargers and the bs of the hurricanes really makes this list a contender.
