Hey, so when I'm building lists right now, whenever I'm looking at support models, obviously JR comes first, I don't think that requires much thought on my part, but when I come to grabbing my second support model, either free or by points, I've started to come to a real quandary. Namely should I reach to Arlan Strangewayes or the Squire? Both effectively give out a focus a turn, Strangewayes with a much more limited scope to what said focus can do, but many more tricks in his bag, while the squire doesn't do much, but what it does, it does very well.
So I guess my question is "are there times you take one and not the other, and if so, which one?" And secondarily, "What casters absolutely need both, can do with what be or the other, or frankly don't care?"

Usually I would look at the squire first personally, depending on the list - there are a lot of cases where that control range really helps. That said, in heavy metal the balance shifts some since you are running a lot of points in jacks, and magic weapons and repairs suddenly becomes quite nice.

You're right that they do similar things, but the statement is a bit of a simplification, as it's only looking at one of the things that each does: grant a focus. For that bit, Arlan can do it forever, but in a limited way. The squire can only do it three times, but that focus has much more flexibility.
But there's more. Arlan can also grant evasive action or magic weapons. That second can be a game-changer in certain matchups. Arlan also has repair, which is situationally critical. The squire's extra control range is super-helpful sometimes. And the squire grants that all-important spell re-roll. Lastly, Arlan is doing one of those four things with his action, whereas the squire can do all of his things every turn.
It probably comes down to which caster you're taking, and in many situations it's nice to have both.

Really depends on my feat and spell list. For a feat like Stryker1, I want the control range and have tons of defensive power in my spell list + feat, so I take Squire. With Maddox, I like Arlan, cause repairing an arm that got shot off before I got to feat makes a big difference and I don't have any great ways to keep my jacks safe outside Junior's arcane shield, which is usually on the Lances.

I always favour the squire. It's extra focus that can be used on the 'jacks *or* for casting spells, for a start. The added control range not only enhances most feats, but also gives you more flexibility when placing 'jacks.
In 75pts, I generally manage to get both in without an issue.

I think it is a funny question. When I first started playing I would always reach for Arlan and put him in almost every list due to power up. I never understood why people liked Squire. Then I went to using Squire in every list and rarely used Arlan. Now with HM theme and the meta Arlan is making a return to many to my lists regularly due to magical weapons and repair. Now it mostly depends on caster and theme for me. On a subconscious level I want those 5 free points of squire vs. 4 free points of Arlan just because its more free stuff.
