If you could go back in time to give yourself advice for warmahordes, what would you say? How might that have helped you?

Hmm, probably netlist a few armies as a starting point. Buying your way through all of the subpar stuff and getting it painted is not an entirely optimal experience >.>

The guilt I felt whenever bringing a powerful caster or a strong list was so stupid. And it led to me going through a year of MKII with almost no wins. I'm now playing whatever I please, and I expect my opponent to do the same.

I still don't own Haley2 ^_^.
I think looking for ideas and inspiration around the stuff you want to use *is* a good idea. After two and a bit years I own something like 700pts of Cygnar/friendly mercs...and that's just not realistic for a lot of gamers. You can netlist without always opting for the most powerful stuff out there or just use portions of what you find (I'd take out Sloan in Mk2 and still like to throw out Kraye in Mk3).
tl;dr: It pays to do a little research.

Honestly? I still don't know. After 3+ years of playing I'm baffled by this question. Not that it doesn't have an answer but that it doesn't have a right answer.
I know people who power game and that's the way they roll. And I know guys playing Gunnbjorn with two Wagons and having fun. For guys like me I guess I sit in such a weird spot competitively speaking. There's this part of me that plays a ton of games and can be truly legitimate in a tournament. But this other part of me that wants to take Jakes2 to every tournament and jank-tank my way to a 3-1 standing on the day.
If I'm talking to the competitive part of me: "Netlist more. Don't be afraid to take advice from better players."

Maybe a couple things? Not much though.
"Desert sand does not adhere well with dilute white glue. Yeah, it sounds cheap. You'll end up rebasing all of them."
"So Mark3 is coming in a few months and everything will be rebalanced. Those merc trolls will be used like twice, but they're still going to be fun to paint. Ditto the murder horses.
